The European Union Railway Agency defines ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) as a single European signalling and speed control system that ensures the interoperability of national railway systems while reducing the costs of purchasing and maintaining the signalling system and increasing train speed, infrastructure capacity and railway safety.
Spain's national high-speed network is the longest in Europe and the second longest in the world, with more than 3,762 kilometres of track. The railway connects 18.8 million passengers with the main Spanish cities at speeds exceeding 350 kilometres per hour.
