Companies collect and store data at an almost exponential rate, making it difficult to maintain data integrity. Consistency is essential for data to be reliable, relevant and accessible at all times.
Data integrity is a critical component of information security. This term refers to the quality and consistency of the data contained in a DB, data warehouse or other structure in its broadest sense. It can be used to describe a state, a process or a function, and is often used as a substitute for "data quality".
There is a minimum set of criteria that information must meet in order to qualify as "data integrity":
Completeness:
All the data should represent all dimensionality of the reality.
Accuracy:
After all data are complete, the information must correspond to reality.
Frequency:
If the data is complete and correct, but not up to date, then the integrity of the information is compromised.
Security:
Logical and physical access must be established and monitored to safeguard information from unauthorised modification, deletion and retrieval.
