LEAN manufacturing rules are derived from the Japanese manufacturing business. This term was first coined by John Krafcik in his 1988 paper from his fellowship dissertation at the MIT Sloan School of Management: "Success of Lean Industry Methods".
Lean manufacturing, Lean industry or simply "LEAN", is the systematic method for the reduction of waste (Muda) within the manufacturing organisation without sacrificing productivity, which can cause problems. Lean also takes into account material produced by overloading (Muri) and material produced by irregularities in commercial loads (Mura). Running from the perspective of the customer who consumes the product or service, it amounts to any act or activity for which the consumer would be willing to pay.
Lean manufacturing or Lean production is the method of techniques and actions to execute the manufacturing or service process. These techniques and actions differ according to the use in question, but they have one basic principle: the elimination of all actions and materials that do not add value to the work.
