SMART GRID

The deployment of smart grids is one of the three main thematic areas within the Trans-European Energy Networks (TEN-E), which works to encourage the uptake of renewable energy in the European energy market and enables users to better manage their energy consumption.

"Smartgrid" refers to the smart grid, a system of transmission lines, substations, transformers and other elements that carry energy from the power plant to every home and facility. The electricity grid is more than just a production and communication structure. It is the system of asset owners, manufacturers, service providers and government officials at the federal, government and local levels, all working together to produce one of the most reliable electricity grids in the world.

The Energy Office (EO) is working with its public and individual partners to improve, change and enhance the energy architecture to ensure access to reliable, secure and clean energy sources.

Today, a power interruption, such as a blackout, would have a domino effect, a series of failures that can affect finances, communication and security. The smart grid can make our power system resilient and better prepared to deal with emergencies such as intense storms, earthquakes, massive solar flares and violent attacks.

Due to its bi-directional interactive output, this intelligent network can provide automatic rerouting when equipment breakdowns or outages occur. This can decrease outages and lessen the consequences when they do occur. When a power outage occurs, smart grid technologies can discover and split those outages, containing them before they become large-scale blackouts.
